The APSARD U.S. Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Adults
Goodman David W, Mattingly Greg. Psychiatric Annals 2023
This publication describes the complex process of developing and publishing Clinical Practice Guidelines in psychiatry. The American Professional Society for ADHD and Related Disorders has commissioned a Task Force with ~25 expert members to write the first U.S. guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of adult ADHD. This, in fact, would be the first set of guidelines for adult ADHD in the world. Our publication details the complex and arduous process that includes following processes established by the Institute of Medicine and the American Psychiatric Association, vetting conflict of interests for Task Force members, following a Delphi methods for establishing text of guidelines, performing an extensive scientific literature review, writing supportive scientific narrative for each guideline, submitting drafts for professional critical review, integrating public commentary, and providing an extensive reference section. The details for each of these steps is outlined in this publication.
